Helvetia applies data management to its digital transformation program
Context
Helvetia Environnement, a Swiss company born of family heritage, has been a major player in global waste management since its creation in 2005. Active in the collection, sorting, recovery and conversion of waste into energy, the company's activities cover several Swiss cantons with over 500 employees. Faced with the digital transformation of the waste sector, Helvetia Environnement is launching an ambitious digital transformation program in 2019, committing itself to refining global management, automating data flows, dematerializing functions and implementing focused data governance.
Issues
The Swiss waste management sector is evolving rapidly, driven by digitization, innovation and data exploitation. Helvetia Environnement aims to meet several challenges, including improving performance management, fully computerizing business data flows, simplifying processes, and setting up an architecture conducive to future developments. Data governance has been identified as a key component in meeting these challenges.
Methods
To support Helvetia Environnement, our approach is divided into several phases. The first phase is organizational, defining a program vision centered on data. The second phase analyzes the IT landscape, aligning the building blocks of a data platform with technical constraints and business challenges. An architecture inspired by distributed models is recommended, putting data at the heart of the transformation. The third phase consists of instantiating the program, with CROSS piloting the project, designing the datahub, establishing data management principles, and defining the data-centric organization.
Benefits
The approach adopted is aimed at aligning the "data" pillars to effectively support the transformation program. We have built a sustainable architecture, integrating future challenges while offering an agile solution adaptable to current needs. The shift from a point-to-point approach to a centralized architecture, called the DataHub, simplifies data governance, making it more consistent, flexible and scalable over time. The DataHub acts as a brick for mediation, storage and exchange of consistent data, complementing traditional Data Warehouse and Data Lake architectures. This approach meets Helvetia Environnement's current needs while anticipating future challenges, providing a solid foundation for dynamic, innovative development in a constantly changing environment.
